How to Cancel Your Account with CenturyLink

If you are cancelling CenturyLink because of an unresolved complaint, let us help you file a claim.

If your CenturyLink services are getting too expensive or they aren’t living up to expectations, you might be curious how to cancel your account with CenturyLink.

Maybe they overcharged you or you just don’t need your services anymore. Whatever the reason, we explain how to cancel your account and what to do if there are any problems.

Steps to Cancel Your CenturyLink Account

Start by signing in to your My CenturyLink account. There is a button on your home screen with a big green button that says, “Disconnect Service”.

If you cannot sign into your account or you prefer to do it with a customer service representative, you can call between 8am and 6pm Monday through Friday at 800-244-1111.

You can also contact customer service for assistance in other ways.

  • When you reach out to customer service let them know that you want to cancel your account. They will probably start by offering you alternatives to cancellation which may or may not be a good fit for your situation.
  • After that, they will tell you how to confirm cancellation of your account and return any necessary equipment. You should receive shipping instructions and shipping labels to print and ship your return equipment. Always get certified mail with tracking so that you can verify your equipment was received by CenturyLink and avoid unnecessary charges for unreturned equipment.

Alternatives to Cancellation

CenturyLink makes it clear that if you are moving there are ways that you might be able to keep your CenturyLink service when you move.

If you are unable to pay for your current services you have options for reducing your CenturyLink bill, such as pausing and then restoring your service

Fees Associated with Canceling

When you cancel your account, there are a few things you need to remember:

  1. Firstly, according to the fine print of most terms and conditions, if you sign up for a CenturyLink service, you are entered into a contract that is either 2 years long or 3 years long. As of writing, if you have a 2-year contract and you cancel prematurely, they will charge you $200 and if you have a three-year contract and cancel prematurely they will charge you $300.
  2. Secondly, if you are renting any equipment, you have to return it within 30 days after canceling your service. If you don’t you will be charged up to $200.
  3. If your cable account is a bundle, the company allows you to cancel one or more of your services, but it might mean that the rate you receive for the rest of your services will go up. If you have a bundle you might consider speaking with a CenturyLink customer service representative about how canceling your cable service might affect other services.
  4. If you paid a deposit when setting up your service, then the deposit and interest associated with it will be returned to you at the cancellation. You will receive a closing bill by mail which will not only show the amount they sent back to you and any amounts you owe them.

Common Disputes and Complaints when Cancelling CenturyLink Cable

FairShake has fielded many kinds of CenturyLink complaints. Among them, customers have faced serious problems with billing and account cancellations. Some customers have complained about closing their account and facing unexpected charges. Most of the time these charges are early termination fees for individuals who signed up for a contract, but early termination fees they did not realize were a part of their account. Other issues have to do with bundled packages whereby canceling cable service means all the other services are more expensive.
