If you had an issue with your Comcast service or your bills, you might deserve a refund. Maybe they overcharged you, maybe they forgot to cancel a service that you have asked them to cancel. So what does the Comcast refund policy look like? Can I get a refund from Comcast?
If there is a problem with your account, maybe an extra charge or a mistake made by customer service that resulted in problems with your bill, Comcast requests that you reach out to customer service in order to request a refund. That refund is typically given back to you in the form of a credit balance which gets applied to the bill for the following month. Unless you directly contact customer service and ask for a refund in another form, any refund request that is approved by Comcast will simply be credited to your next bill. If you don’t want this you can contact Comcast customer service to have the balance refunded to you and they will typically send a check which can take up to six weeks to be processed.
According to the terms and service for Comcast, when you activate a service you are required to pay a refundable deposit. If you add any equipment or service to your account, you are also required to pay a refundable deposit, and if there are any situations where you fail to pay any amount when they are due, Comcast reserves the right to require that you pay a refundable deposit to reactivate your account.
If your account remains in good standing for 12 months, that full amount of your deposit will be credited to your account. If you completely disconnect all of your services and cancel any contract with Comcast, the refundable deposit will be credited to your account minus any other amounts that you owe within 30 days so long as all of the equipment you have is returned. If Comcast believes that the equipment was damaged or altered or in some way subject to the unreturned equipment fee, they can take that money owed from the refund they give you for the original refundable deposit you made on your account.
If you decide to cancel your Comcast account, you can notify the company officially through the email provided on the website or with a written notice to the local business office, or by calling customer service. At that time Comcast will refund all prepaid monthly service fees that were charged for any services that took place after the date of termination, again minus any outstanding balances that you owe.
These outstanding balances can take the form of equipment charges which are a common complaint among customers who claimed that they followed all of the Comcast rules and returned all the equipment but Comcast claims that it was subject to a fee and then took fee from the refund.
If you pay an unreturned equipment fee when you terminate your service agreement, and then you return your equipment, Comcast will refund you the unreturned equipment fee in full.
In situations where you have no problem with your account and you don’t want to cancel your services, you might still qualify for a refund because of service interruptions. In states like Vermont if your television service is interrupted for more than 24 consecutive hours, Comcast will give you a credit to your TV monthly service charges that is proportionate to the amount of time where your service was interrupted. But in order for this to be credited to your account you have to call 1-800-XFINITY to request a credit. Similarly, if you live in Maine, and your television is interrupted for more than six consecutive hours within a 30-day. You can qualify for a pro-rata credit or refund but you have to reach out to customer service directly and requested; they will not do it automatically even if they know that the television service was interrupted and that you deserve the refund.
With any of these situations, billing problems, cancellation problems, service interruptions, and the like, if you believe that you deserve a refund Comcast puts the responsibility on your shoulders. It is up to you to reach out to customer service by calling the customer service line, emailing customer service, or otherwise reaching out and requesting the refund directly. If you as the account owner do not request it, they will not go out of their way to give it to you.
Comcast might in some cases refuse to issue the refund you deserve, either because they just ignore the issue or their customer service denies the issue. In any case if they fail to give you a refund that you deserve, meaning something that is clearly spelled out in your Comcast contract, you can use consumer arbitration.
