Santander Consumer USA Wrongly Sent my Account to Collections and Hurt my Credit Score

I went to Santander to close a checking and over draft account. They gave me a payoff amount the day I was there and I paid it the day I was there.

After about a month I began to receive notes that the postal service had a certified letter from them, but they would not leave it for me. I went to the bank and found out that I owed $18 for an unknown reason. I went back to the branch and the person who helped me close the account Jacob was there. He had no idea what was going on, but we discussed and decided that paying it at the time was the best move to avoid additional fees and reports to the credit bureau.

I was just told today by Summer Faller at the Executive Branch that this was because an auto payment had went thorough a day or so before and it was posted as paid. The thing was, I didn’t have funds in the account and I was closing it. When they gave me the pay off amount, they showed the $18 paid from a checking account at their bank that didn’t have the funds. My objective when I was there was to pay the entire amount off and close the account. I was under the assumption that the pay off would include the entire amount due. It did not.

They have reported me as 60 days delinquent due to this.

What would you like the company to do to fix the problem? (optional)
I just want them to inform the credit bureau’s that this was a mistake as it was a miscommunication. I did not want the lateness on my credit.
