What PayPal did:
Back in early August/late July, I was hired to write an article. I even signed a contract. I later found out the person ‘paying’ me, didn’t exist and the whole job was a scam and I was out a lot of money because you can’t exactly get a contract enforced for someone you can’t contact/probably doesn’t exist, I’m also out of the 40 hours I had already put into the research and writing of this article instead of working my other job. Paypal was unhelpful and just told me to contact the person and wouldn’t listen when I explained that I believed I was scammed. I told Paypal I was being scammed and they needed to stop the transaction happening so the scammers didn’t take my money or their money. At this time, it was less than 24 hours after I initialized the transfer on Paypal on September 14, 2021, and the money hadn’t come out of my account yet. The total amount was for $2,435. They basically said tough luck, sucks to be you. You should talk to your bank and ask them to do a stop payment. I did do a stop payment just like Paypal asked. I confirmed with my bank that since the scammer had my banking information, that it would be best to close the bank account and open a new one, so I did. I was told by Paypal to do a stop payment with my bank. They said nothing about having to pay Paypal the money. The way the messages were written, it seemed like if I did a stop payment it would prevent the scammer from getting the money. Only later did they explain that they ‘fronted’ the money for me, and that I now owe THEM $2,435. I thought everything was fine until two weeks later in late September when I began to get BOMBARDED with calls from Paypal. I’m talking 3-5 or more a day, every day. When I answered to figure out what the heck was happening, they explained I owed them the $2,435. I explained that no I didn’t, I was scammed, this was fraud, and they helped me open up a dispute over the phone. Now here is where my issue is. During this phone call, the representative ASSURED me that I would not be held responsible for this scam, and that my negative Paypal balance would be reduced to $0 owed. I asked three separate times during this phone call to confirm I heard and understood him correctly and every single time he confirmed that yes, the debt would be wiped away and I would not owe Paypal any money. This was a lie. I stupidly believed what the company told me, and took a deep breath and tried to move on with my life. The calls kept coming. Then they denied my dispute basically saying “Sucks to be you but we can’t do anything about it. Sorry. You still owe us $2,435 even though you followed all of our instructions when you realized you were being scammed, and we promised you this would be taken care of multiple times.” I even disputed their denial of my dispute and I was again told “Nope, you still owe us.” Then, me remembering the earlier phone call where they straight up said it would be taken care of, wanted to access the phone recording of that call because I wanted proof that they could be liable for their statements. I contacted them through the message center on their website. At first I was told they were working on getting them for me and it would take 2-3 days. I sent follow up messages asking for updates over the next week and a half, and was told by two other people that it was being worked on and the recordings were being retrieved. It was only on the third update request that they told me that to get phone call records, I would need to call into their customer service, instead of using the message center. Would have been great to know that when three different people said they were working on getting it for me they were lying, but whatever. So I call into customer service to ask for a copy of the phone recording so I can prove that they promised me I would not have to pay for this fraud. They then stated that I need a subpoena sent to their legal department to get it, and that was news to me because no one had mentioned that. Even worse, when I asked how to contact their legal department, they informed me that all I was allowed to do was send a snail mail subpoena. There was no phone number, no e-mail, nothing. Just a place I could send the letter. It is 2021. Most dental offices with one single dentist running the whole place at least have an e-mail address and phone number for crying out loud. For the legal department of a corporation as big as Paypal to not have a public facing phone number or e-mail address that can be easily contacted is incredibly shady in my opinion. I’m not expecting to call and speak with Paypal’s lawyers, but there should be an easier way to contact them, I’m just saying. I just have no idea what do anymore. I don’t even want any money back at this point, or damages for the emotional distress I’ve been under. Dealing with all of this has caused me a mental breakdown, and I’ve discussed the emotional distress with my psychiatrist multiple times. I have had medicine dosages increased because of the sheer amount of distress Paypal has been putting me through on this. I wouldn’t even mind so much if Paypal could just agree on one single thing. Every statement they tell me they change their mind on days later and tell me a contradictory statement. I just don’t want to have to owe them the money I was scammed out of.
