AT&T Claim for Compensation

What AT&T did:
Due to the pandemic I was late returning my equipment. They’ve acknowledged that they received the items, but they are still going to charge me because it was received past the due date. They’ve reported me to a credit agency called afni. They claim I owe over 800.00. This is unfair. A company should not charge customers for returned equipment.
