Airbnb Claim for Compensation
What Airbnb did:
In my opinion AirBnB has wronged me. My reservation
was for 12Aug22 – 15Aug22 and I fled from {{ address hidden }} Brooklyn, NY 11209 approximately 14 hours after
arriving. On 12Aug22 Michael texted “Good morning Adela.
I’m Michael, I will be greeting and expecting you today. I
host with Noor. Feel free to let me know when your
checking in so I can let you in.” I have a screen shot of the
text. His name was not listed in the AirBnB profile. Noor was not present. I actually don’t think she exists. I acknowledged his text and stated I only want to communicate on the AirBnB site. Communicating
on the site gives a certain level of comfort and security.
That was taken from me as he absolutely didn’t honor my
request. Michael was polite and the place was clean. He
showed me the room and it had a full or queen size
mattress on the floor, a bench type seat and an empty Jacuzzi. When I express how I was looking forward to using
the Jucuzzi his demeanor completely changed. He went
from having a slight smile to having a slight frown.
Immediately, I knew either he wasn’t going to allow me to
use it or he didn’t like that I wanted to to use it. I didn’t
press the issue. Something thing that struck me as odd is the lack of furniture. The only furniture in the living room was the mattress on the floor where Michael slept. There was no dining table. I’ve already described the what was in the room where I slept. There was A LOT of personal belongs, but, no furniture. I told him I wanted to take a nap as it had been an exhausting day. When I woke up the apartment was empty. I placed a message on the AirBnB site stating I needed to go to the store and didn’t want to leave the place unlocked. Since, he had yet provided a key I was in a sense stranded. Instead of following the AirBnB’s rule about communicating on the site only he called my cell. He said he was getting supplies and will be back soon. He got back AFTER dark and said “The store is still open you can go.” I couldn’t believe my ears. I generally don’t go walking somewhere after dark. I told him I had already eaten. I was still hungry, however, I didn’t say that as I didn’t want him to offer any food. I didn’t feel safe AT ALL. I then asked for a key for the third time and he said “okay” however, he didn’t provide a key. I left the door to the room where I would be sleeping open for a while as I was waiting for the key. There was no way I was going to ask again. The next day I was thinking about how I can leave without offending him. He slept in the living room on a mattress on the floor. I knew there was no way I was going to leave my belongings there. I didn’t trust this individual who refused to follow AirBnB’s rule of communicating on the site, who absolutely disregarded my request to communicate only on the site, who didn’t provide a key even though I had requested one 3 times. On 13Aug22 he offered a key by way of text. When I heard the shower turn on I rapidly changed out of my pajamas, threw my belongs in my suitcase and got the heck out of there. I reached out to AirBnB and informed the of all that had taken place and said needed to stay elsewhere and why. I was asked how many nights I was there and I replied one. I was told they will only reimburse $89.00 of $253.34. I said that was unacceptable to me and stated I wanted a full refund plus 3 times what I paid which is $253.34 x 3 = $760.02. For a total of $1,013.36. For the distress I had experienced. I also pointed out the fact that I’ve used the service about 18 times and have never requested a refund of any kind and have had excellent reviews. An AirBnB Ambassador sent a message saying they will not honor what I am requesting. I let it be know if I am forced to use any more mental energy on this situation I will ask for more money. When I made the reservation there was only one review and it stated “Good Communicating” from Martin June 2022. The one and only night I was there I called my two adult daughters to give details of what was happening and said I was extremely uncomfortable. They let me know of a second review. The second sentence stated “I don’t think a woman traveling alone would feel safe here.” from Travis August 2022. If that second review had been on the site previously I would not have book this place.
