If Curb is hiding fees in your bill, you may have legal options.
Curb taxi is a way to connect with thousands of taxis in major cities like Miami, Chicago, and New York City. As an official taxi app, you can hail licensed taxis from your phone.
When you hail a taxi from this app the company adds a $2 fee to every ride which is effectively the same as what a regular taxi would add were you to hail it on the side of the road.
With the app you can pay via credit card, PayPal, or cash.
The website has no direct information on the fees beyond this because the cost of the ride is still based on the current cost of a taxi in your city.
On top of the service fee, if you live in New York City, there is a ride later feature where you can book a taxi at a different point in time, not immediately, and for that you might see an additional $3 charge.
In all other locations, if you hail a taxi and you get matched with a driver for more than 30 seconds, and then you cancel, they charge you a $3 cancellation fee.
If you know that you canceled on time and it wasn’t after that 30-second window you can refute the fees related to cancellation. You will have to prove that this was done appropriately, that you canceled before a driver had been matched to you, and it’s recommended that you go through the app and the help center to do so.
If you were incorrectly charged a fee and have tried to fix it with Curb Taxi, but they left you hanging, you have two options.
The first is to go through a small claims court. For this you’ll need to create a demand letter, file paperwork with the court, officially serve the company, and go to your scheduled court hearing. However, most small claims courts not only have fees for this process but they have strict requirements as to what type of case qualifies. If you are looking for compensation for a damage fee or an airport fee that shouldn’t have been charged, something that might only be $100 or less, your case might not qualify.
The second option is to use consumer arbitration. With consumer arbitration, you can use our easy interactive portal to tell us what happened, what fees you were charged and what you want the company to do to fix it. And if they don’t resolve your dispute, you can exercise your right under the user agreement to use the American Arbitration Association to have an independent arbitrator review the situation and make a decision.
