Collections disputes explained

Get DirecTV Collections to Fix Your Credit Report

Did DirecTV Collections get it wrong? Learn about your legal rights…

Just one minor error can move a credit score down a rating category, which makes it more difficult to obtain most types of credit. If DirecTV made an error that negatively influenced your credit report, you have the right to ask the company to make it right.

Federal law protects you from a collections department reporting inaccurate or unsupported items on your credit report. If a company like DirecTV becomes aware it reported incorrect information to a credit bureau like Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion, the company must inform the credit bureaus about the mistake(s).

If you think DirecTV’s Collections Department should remove a negative item from your credit report, here’s how to get it done quickly:

1

CONTACT DIRECTV COLLECTIONS DEPARTMENT

Under federal regulations, you can dispute your credit report directly with DirecTV. To submit the dispute, send a letter containing your identifying information, a description of the dispute, and any supporting evidence to the DirecTV Collections Department at the address provided on your credit report, or the address presented in your DirecTV contract.

Send your letter by certified mail to ensure DirecTV received it. DirecTV has 30 days from the day it received your certified letter to finish a reasonable investigation and send you the results. If the company agrees that you’re right, they have to notify the credit bureaus, which in turn should change or delete the inaccurate information.

2

CONTACT THE THREE MAJOR CREDIT BUREAUS

If you don’t trust DirecTV to fix the issue, federal law also requires the credit bureaus to investigate information reported as inaccurate. The credit bureaus investigate your DirecTV Collections dispute by reporting it to the original company, so reporting to the DirecTV Collections Department and the credit bureaus increases your chances of getting positive results.

To report your DirecTV Collections dispute to the credit bureaus, use the following links: TransUnion customer service click here, Experian customer service dispute click here, and Equifax customer service dispute click here. In most cases, the credit bureaus are responsible for sending you an outcome of an investigation within 30 days of your request.

3

MAKE A LEGAL CLAIM AGAINST DIRECTV THROUGH CONSUMER ARBITRATION

If DirecTV’s collections department and the credit bureaus refuse to correct the issue, you can continue to dispute the issue by filing for consumer arbitration against DirecTV and contesting the negative information in a hearing.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

If you do not receive the result of a DirecTV Collections Department investigation within 30 days of informing the company about a dispute, you may be entitled to up to $1000 in damages under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act.
