What am I paying for? Lyft Fees Explained

Have you been overcharged by Lyft? File a complaint through FairShake and we will work to get you compensated.

Lyft has a complicated payment system. Not only does it have strict minimum fare requirements, it also has three separate tiers of service that all have different costs. Additionally, Lyft reserves the right to charge a variety of other fees on top of your base fare. All of these figures will also vary depending on your location.

Service Types

When you use the Lyft company, you can choose three different service types: Lyft , Lyft Plus, or premier. Lyft is standard, Lyft plus is for groups up to six people that need more space. The initial cost for a regular Lyft ride is an average of $0.90 while Lyft plus is $1.50, and Premier is $3.50. This is going to vary based on your city.

Cancellation fees

According to Lyft, if you have already booked a ride but you don’t need it you can cancel it in the app but they may charge you a cancellation fee to compensate the driver for time and gas. This cancellation fee will be charged when the cancellation window has passed after your Lyft driver accepted your request, and the Lyft driver is on time, ready to arrive within 5 minutes of the estimated arrival time.

If you are using a shared-ride they might charge you a cancellation fee after the driver has accepted your ride request. The cancellation fees are based on the city and you can verify what your estimated fee will be or should be by submitting your intended pick-up and drop-off location under the city’s pages.

Service fee

Lift as a service fee on a per ride basis. It should be stated as a service fee on the line item. The amount is based upon your city so if you are accustomed to using Lyft in your hometown but then you use it in Miami on vacation, the charge you see might be higher because it’s in a different city.

The service fee is an average of $1.90 and there is a minimum fare requirement of $3.50 for Lyft, $4.70 for Lyft plus, and $10 for premier. There was also a charge per minute and per mile. The per minute cost for standard Lyft service is $0.09 per minute, $0.18 per minute for Lyft plus, and $0.30 per minute for premier. The per-mile rate is 90 cents per mile on average for Lyft, $1.50 for Lyft plus, and $2.05 for premier.

Why did I get charged a damage fee, what is it for?

If you or someone in your group caused any type of damage to the car, Lyft will assess a damage fee and then charge whatever your default payment method is. They will, according to their website, send an email to you if you are charged a damage fee and in the email it will tell you which ride resulted in the damage, with photos of the damage, and they will give you an updated receipt once they charge you for the damage.

Can I refute fees related to damage fees?

Yes you can try to refute these fees through the company. Once they send you the informative email with the information you can try to prove that this did not take place when you or any members of your party were using that particular ride.

Are there other hidden fees I’m being charged for this that I’m not aware of?

There are a handful of other hidden fees that you might not be aware of when you make your booking.

Toll fees

You might have a toll fee if you drove through a city where there were tolls. In some situations drivers might have to pay a tunnel or Bridge toll to get back to their original destination and that’s added to your upfront price. if you pay for a toll outside of the app, Lyft can’t remove it or refund the cost. The total amount is based on what the actual toll was.

*Any trip between New Jersey and New York City will have a $20 surcharge on each ride and that includes the tolls. If you are starting a New Jersey and you have to cross the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, they add an additional $19 surcharge.

So, if you’re going from New Jersey to New York it could cost you an extra $39 to account for both of these tolls.

Airport fees

Lyft charges pick-up and drop-off fees for airports, the amount of which is contingent upon your city.

Temporary authorizations

When you create a list account and you add your payment method or request a ride, you might notice a pending transaction. According to the website that is not a charge but simply a temporary authorization. They claim that the authorization will never actually process as a charge but will simply show as pending. your card issuer should remove it within five to seven business days with it never charging your card and once you have paid for your ride, the authorization is released immediately. However, that doesn’t mean that all financial institutions abide by this and in some cases you might have an authorization that went through as a charge when it shouldn’t have, or an authorization that caused an overdraft. If so, you can fight back.

Other fees

Keep in mind that Lyft reserves the right to charge you other fees for things like special venues.

What can I do if I was incorrectly charged a fee?

If you were incorrectly charged a fee and have tried to fix it with Lyft, but they left you hanging, you have two options.

The first is to go through a small claims court.  For this you’ll have to make sure your case qualifies. Most small claims courts have a minimum monetary amount of damages around $2,500, so if the amount you’re asking for is less than that, your case won’t qualify.

The second option is to use consumer arbitration.  With consumer arbitration, you have a lot more flexibility as to what cases qualify. It’s also usually a faster and easier way to get quick resolution for incorrectly charged fees.
