Not getting results from Navient customer service? You may have options to escalate…
Navient, based in Wilmington, DE, used to be Sallie Mae. The government program became a private sector entity in 2013-2014. Navient services student loan debt from the United States Department of Education. Navient manages a portfolio of approximately $227 billion in student loans.
If Navient holds your loan, you may already know that its student loan servicing does not have a stellar reputation. Navient is involved in numerous lawsuits surrounding the tactics used in collections of outstanding balances.
Navient was named in a suit by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a government entity, in 2017. CFPB alleged that Navient gave false information to borrowers. Navient vehemently denies the claim and litigation is still pending.
If you need information about your loan that is not provided by Navient, you can reach the United States Department of Education at U.S. Department of Education, FSA Ombudsman, 830 First Street, Fourth Floor, NE, Washington, DC 20202-5144.

If you have attempted to work out a solution with Navient, but are unable to reach a satisfactory resolution, you can file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. You can also call the CFPB student loan complaint department at 1-855-411-2372. Remember, the role of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is to make sure that consumers are treated fairly by banks and lenders. They cannot do anything about the status of your student loan or provide information about the loan.
The CFPB is there to make sure that lenders cannot make it unduly difficult to access your loan information, make payments or refuse you information about the status of your loan. If you plan to file a complaint with the CFPB, have as much information about your loan as possible on hand. Also, keep a record of how and when you have attempted to contact Navient, who you spoke to, and any resolution that was promised.
Most people who file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau receive a response within 15 days. The CFPB has resources that are unavailable to the average consumer and may be able to help you resolve your issue with Navient if you have failed to receive a satisfactory response through customer service.
