Uber customers take note: Historic barbecue spot Flint’s eyes new locations after exit from Uber founder’s controversial ghost kitchen

The dream of bringing back Flint’s Barbecue, an East Bay legend back in the ’70s and ’80s, to a new Oakland location is on pause. But the family’s famous barbecue sauce and coarse-ground links might go to a nearby city.

Crystal Martin, the granddaughter of Willie Flintroy — who founded the original Flint’s in East Oakland in 1968 — has been trying to resurrect Flint’s for two years. After some failed lease negotiations, Martin signed Flint’s on to join a new CloudKitchens ghost kitchen facility in North Oakland earlier this year. The ghost kitchen, a famously secretive company led by ex-Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick, made headlines when neighbors tried to fight it.

But Flint’s recently announced it would no longer be part of CloudKitchens. Martin said she couldn’t reveal why. The facility, dubbed Longfellow Food Hall, appears to be moving forward as planned, with multiple takeout- and delivery-only restaurants “coming soon” on its website. CloudKitchens didn’t respond to a request for comment.
