How to Negotiate Your XfinityBill

Most of us have a hard time paying our bills from time to time.  Whether your bill is more than what you expected or you are being charged for service that you didn’t receive, if you have service with Comcast or Xfinity you may be able to find some relief.  Below are steps that you can take that might help you to get your monthly charges under control.

Review your monthly bill

When we sign up for services, we are often given a promotional rate.  Sometimes the rate may be more than what you expect. You may also see additional charges that you weren’t aware of, such as installation or activation fees.  If the amount that you are being charged is not what you expect, call customer service to resolve this as quickly as you can.

Comcast has a high number of complaints lodged with the Better Business Bureau about its billing practices.  Customers who cancel their service often report not being given credit for returned equipment or continuing to be charged for services that they never received.  In other cases, customers report that they never received credit under Comcast or Xfinity’s special promotions. There are also complaints from customers who cancel their service but aren’t given credit for returned equipment or they continue to be billed for services they never received.

By reviewing your monthly bill, you can catch billing errors and unauthorized charges.  Not only does this keep your bill low, but it can also save you the aggravation of trying to resolve billing discrepancies months later.

Comcast promotions

Comcast offers a variety of promotions and rebates for new and current customers.

New customer promotions

Xfinity, a brand of Comcast, offers a variety of new customer promotional rates for internet, television, and phone service.  These plans are often bundled and typically run for a period of 12 months. Keep in mind that after these promotional rates end, you may see your charges adjusted to Xfinity’s standard rates.

Student discounts

If you are a student and new to Comcast or Xfinity, you may be eligible for up to a $100 prepaid card when you sign up for selected plans.  You will be required to confirm your student status. If you live on campus, you may also be eligible for special pricing or discounts, based upon the school you attend

Active service and veteran promotions

If you actively serve in the military or are a veteran, you may be eligible for a $100 prepaid card when you install new service.  New and current customers are also eligible for a $25 credit that can be used toward Xfinity on Demand.

Internet essentials package

Low-income families may be eligible for low-cost internet service with speeds up to 15 / 2 Mbps.  To qualify;

  • You must be in an area that can get Comcast service
  • Receive financial assistance from either a federal or state program
  • Have not had Xfinity internet service for the last 90 days
  • Do not have an outstanding balance with Comcast that is less than one year old
  • Households must be eligible to participate in one federal assistance program including Medicaid, SNAP, or the National School Lunch Program.

Eligible customers can pay $9.95 plus tax per month under this package.  Also included are WiFi service and 40 hours of access to WiFi outside of the home through an Xfinity Hotspot.   You also have an option to purchase an internet-ready computer for $149.99. Xfinity has a reward program that allows you to earn up to $175 in prepaid Visa cards when you refer an eligible friend or family member.  There is an annual limit of $500 per year. To get started, you need to enroll in the Xfinity’s Refer-A-Friend program.

Credits on devices

Certain devices from Samsung, LG, Motorola, or iPhone may be eligible for a $100 – $400 prepaid Visa card.  Be sure to check the terms of your purchase to see if your purchase qualifies. You may also be eligible for rebates on promotional devices.

Speak to customer service

Comcast and Xfinity customers who sign up under a promotional package are often surprised to see their bill jump when the special rate ends.  While most promotions offered are for new customers, you can try calling customer service to see if there might be some financial relief for you.  If you are a long-time customer or pay your bill on-time every month, they may be willing to adjust your rate or give you credit. In some cases, regional locations may have special promotions that you might be eligible for.
