Common Complaints Against Mastercard

What complaints do people like you have against Mastercard? And what can you do about them?

Are you frustrated with the amount of time that it takes MasterCard to reverse the duplicate or fraudulent charges on your credit card? Have you reported a problem to MasterCard but haven’t gotten a resolution? Have you contacted support with no response?

If these scenarios sound familiar, you aren’t alone.  Some of the top complaints of MasterCard customers include:

  1. Disputed charges
  2. Problems with gift cards
  3. Poor customer service

In addition to these complaints against MasterCard specifically, there are also reports of vendors and businesses not following credit card guidelines. If this is something you’ve experienced, learn how to report violations here.

1

Disputed charges

A common frustration of MasterCard customers comes when they try to dispute a duplicate or fraudulent charge.  Even after the customer has tried to resolve the issue with the original vendor and is unable to do so, they encounter difficulties when they contact MasterCard’s customer service for help.  They are often told to go back to the original vendor or they are required to provide a significant amount of documentation. This can often be a challenge when the charge is a duplicate as it is often a mistake made by a vendor.  Even with proper documentation, customers report that it can take several days or weeks before their accounts are credited.

Customers report similar frustrations when disputing fraudulent charges.  Most are unaware of the charges until they receive their statement or are unable to use their card.  When they do contact customer service, they often experience long hold times or deal with agents that are unable to help them.  Customers report that it can take several days to have fraudulent charges removed, which can interfere with their ability to use their credit cards.

Problems with gift cards

MasterCard offers a variety of gift cards and prepaid card options that can be purchased in local stores for a fee.  Top complaints include the need to submit a significant amount of documentation to use the card even though it has already been paid for and an inability to use the funds that have been paid for.  In some cases, funds are not available as the account needs to be setup. In other cases, customers find that the balance has been wiped out with a fraudulent charge. When they contact customer service, they are often given misinformation or do not receive the help that they need.

Other common complaints stem from changes to customer accounts without informing them.  Dropping credit limits or putting holds on checks that were deposited are frequent grievances.  In other cases, customers that have multiple accounts with Citibank report that payment errors can take several days or weeks to get resolved.   Some customers are advised that erroneous credit card payments will be moved to the correct account only to find that not being the case. Rather, the amount is mailed to the customer so that they can make the payment to the correct credit card account.  The customer is often charged late fees as a result, even though they had made their payment timely.

Poor customer service

When a customer experiences a problem with their MasterCard credit card, they often encounter long wait times while they are waiting for a service agent.  In some cases, it can take them several minutes just to get through the automated attendant before even being routed to a customer service agent. Customers also complain that they are unable to understand customer service agents or are asked to repeat basic information several times on a phone call.  Or they just become frustrated with the agent’s lack of knowledge and inability to help.
