Need help getting the Orbitz refund you’re owed? You may have legal options
As much as most travelers hate to admit it, a lot of things can derail a trip. The weather, sickness, technical delays, and other problems all outside of your control can cause a planned vacation or trip to fall by the wayside, and when that happens you need to get a handle on a refund.
But if you bought your plane tickets through the third party website Orbitz, then how do you get your refund then? Do you need to deal with the third party separately? Can you use Orbitz to make the cancellations easier? These are all predictable questions that might be circling around in your head, and they are easy to answer.
Thankfully, getting a flight canceled and getting your money back, even with Orbitz is pretty easy. It only takes a few steps and a couple of clicks, and soon you’ll have your money back.
Whenever you received your flight from Orbitz, you will have created an account and also will have gotten a confirmation email that contains your itinerary number. You will need to get your hands on that number from the email or from your ‘My Trips’ page. You will also need to have the proposed dates of your travel, and the information that you used to make the reservation.
Typically this is a phone number or email that you used during the booking process, and make sure to have that ready.

You can cancel the trip online by either canceling through the ‘my trips’ page and following the on-page instructions, or by using the chat function that is on the same page. If you need help, then our virtual agents will guide you through the process of canceling your trip and help make sure that you don’t have any questions.
Additionally, you can also fill out a cancellation request form using all of your information, and once the form is approved them your trip will be canceled. For most trips, you should cancel through the Orbitz website, although in some cases our agents will direct you to contact the airline directly if that is needed for an effective cancelation.
Finally, Orbitz is focused the most on clients who have current trips that need to be canceled within 30 days of the trip date. So if your trip was scheduled to start a few months out, please wait to cancel your trip until the start date gets closer. It just makes things easier for everyone.
With the COVID-19 Pandemic disrupting travel everywhere at the time of this writing, Orbitz has made some changes to its cancelation policies. Most airlines are waiving change and cancelation fees, and Orbitz respects those changes, although they do charge a 30 dollar fee to change airline tickets.
However, if you purchased your tickets less than 24 hours ago, then you can cancel your flight for free. It’s important to keep cancelation in the back of your mind during the 24 hours after you have made your purchase, since this is the best time to cancel for free and avoid having the cancelation fee subtracted from your refund.
You will also need to take a look and see if your flight is refundable, as some flights are not. In those cases, you will not have any way to get your money back. However, those airlines do replace money with credits that you can use on other flights. If you know you are going to be traveling on the same airline again, then perhaps having a credit for your next flight is a good risk to take.
The credit will be given to you in the cancelation email that comes whenever you cancel your flight, as well as the instructions on how to use it, and how much the credit is worth. Make sure to keep that email around until the next flight, as that information is valuable!
However, if you don’t want to gamble with your money, then always make sure to book a refundable flight.
Once your flight is canceled, Orbitz sends the refund back to the original form of payment, minus any cancellation fees. You will be able to track the status of your refund through the ‘MyTrips’ page and it should be processed in one day. The refund might take twelve weeks to get issued and refunded, but the timetable can change depending on the airline.
If you booked two different one-way flights from Orbitz, then you will be canceling and charging each one separately, so keep that in mind when you buy!
Most airlines are issuing several rewards and benefits right now to make things a bit easier for travelers, and if you want to get the most out of your canceled flight, then see what benefits you can grab.
If you are a part of your airline’s rewards or loyalty program, then you might want to check and see if you can keep your rewards. During the time of COVID-19, the Orbucks from the Orbitz reward programs have had their expiration dates extended so they can still be used once this crisis is over.
Other airlines might allow you to keep your credits or points, or take any cancelation fees out of those points, so you can get the most out of your refund. Then you can prepare for future travel and have some benefits that you can use right away.
Orbitz makes it easy to cancel your flight and get your refund right in the application, and it helps to make sure that you can track your money until it gets right back into your default payment method.
While it might take a bit for the money to show up, and you will need to pay a cancelation fee, Orbitz is still a fast and convenient way to cancel your flight and ensure that you will receive your money.
