Having issues with US Bank? You may have legal options.
Not sure whether US Bank is a good bank? Looking for more information before you open an account?
You aren’t alone. To help you make an informed decision, we’ve put together some reviews and ratings the bank has received from reliable sources, including Consumer Affairs and Nerd Wallet.
US Bank is a mid-sized bank with 3,000 branches operating across 26 States. They offer a range of checking and savings accounts with promotional CDs that have more attractive starting APY than other banks, often an average of 1.75%.
US bank has been ranked 3 out of 5 stars by Nerdwallet.
Consumer Affairs has given US Bank a low 1 out of 5 star rating because of the high fees, the bad rates, the poorly functioning website, and mobile app, and the poor customer service.
Checking Accounts - 3.5/5
According to NerdWallet, US Bank has seven types of checking accounts ranging from the basic options for students two options for people who don’t want to use checks but exclusively rely on debit cards, and interest-bearing accounts for seniors.
They’ve earned a ranking of 3.5 out of 5 stars from NerdWallet.
The Easy checking account is the most basic, with a monthly fee of $8.95 however, for those who opted for online statements only that fee drops to $6.95. Direct deposits at a minimum of $1,000 result in no monthly fee.
No matter the type of account you have, you will be charged $2.50 in transaction fees for using ATMs that are not from this bank.
Savings Accounts - 2.5/5
The savings accounts have not fared as well. NerdWallet has given them 2.5 out of 5 stars. There are eight types of savings accounts you can find ranging from the basic account to more lucrative accounts although there is a minimum deposit of $25 with low, 0.01%, APY across the board.
CD’s - 1.5/5
The CDs have earned an even lower score of 1.5 out of 5 stars. This, much like the savings accounts is due to the fact that there’s a very high minimum deposit, you can’t find many options, and the rates are low.
For simple matters, customer service reviews are positive with fast responses through the social media apps as well as the online portal. Things get a bit more complicated when they’re our account problems that have to do with transactions, not just basic questions such as resetting a password.
As one consumer stated on Consumer Affairs, “Ridiculous wait times on phone each time, no return calls as promised as well as condescending attitude from management.”
The overdraft fees have been the center of many complaints with Consumer Affairs, as well as other hidden fees. They charge $36 per transaction and they can charge you up to four times per day. This adds up very quickly and becomes particularly problematic for consumers when the activity that caused the overdraft in question was connected to fraudulent activity. In these situations the cost can become hundreds of dollars very quickly in fees alone which consumers have to pay out-of-pocket up front before the bank will even open the fraudulent activity and investigate.
Complaints lodged with consumer affairs reflect a recurring theme of not only high overdraft fees and direct deposit requirements but serious issues when it comes to customer service. Whether it’s fraudulent activity, unexpected charges, or accumulated points expiring without warning, consumers have voiced serious problems getting a hold of customer service in the first place and even in the situations where they do connect with someone, their issue remains unresolved.
Unfortunately consumer complaints lodged against US Bank echo some of the sentiments of other big banks in that long-term customers who find themselves in need of assistance when it comes to their mortgage are pushed to do things like loan modifications which can take months and during that time make it impossible to pay any late payments on the mortgage plus putting consumers even deeper into the hole.
If you have a complaint against US Bank, and you aren’t getting a solution to your problem, we can help.
