Google is arguably the biggest umbrella company in the world. They have their digital fingers in almost every sector, and that includes home security with their Google Nest offerings. But Google Nest is much more than a simple home security system; it’s a hub where you can connect all of your home automation gadgets and appliances into a single, Google overseen network. In this guide, we’ll go over everything there is to know about Google Nest Home Security and examine whether their features are worthwhile… as well as examine what their current customers have to say about their services.
Google Nest offers a lot of features in addition to its security package, and they price things differently from most of the competition.
The home security package is called Nest Secure, and costs $399. This includes a central hub for the security system, two entry sensors, two Nest tags (which are essentially keychain fobs), and a proprietary application for mobile devices.
Nest also provides secure monitoring plans. There’s a free self-monitoring option you can take advantage of if you don’t want someone else keeping an eye on your home while you’re gone. Or you can enroll in 24/7 professional monitoring, which is offered by Brinks; the two companies collaborate with one another frequently.
Additionally, Nest provides video monitoring plans. These are called “Nest Aware” subscriptions and include day-long plans like 5 Days, 10 Days, and longer. These range in price from $5 per month to $30 per month, and each of these plans come with advanced video surveillance features like AI facial recognition or video history scanning.
Even beyond all these benefits, Nest comes with a significant plethora of home automation accessories and gadgets you can select à la carte. These include things like Nest smoke alarms, thermostats, temperature sensors, and indoor cameras. All of these tie into the main control system you get with the Nest Secure package.
We can look at other review companies to see how Google Nest compares in the real world.
Consumer Affairs provides us with a huge collection of user reviews from those who’ve actually used this home security system. At this time, Google Nest has an overall rating of about 1.6 stars out of 5, with most of the reviews being negative. Nest products are evidently known for being finicky or difficult to work with, and Nest’s customer support is temperamental at best. Several customers have had issues getting replacements for certain equipment or having their technical difficulties answered within reasonable time frames.
We can also look at Trustpilot: one of the biggest review collection websites on the Internet. With 377 reviews for this service in total, Google Nest has overall negative reviews at about 82% bad, for a 1.4 out of 5 score. Most of these customers have issues with the customer service representatives or with general poor product quality. Many of the devices mentioned in these reviews have serious manufacturing or security issues.
Let’s also look at Reviews.org’s review of Nest; they give the company a 4 out of 5 thanks to their flexible monitoring options and unique features and sensor designs. But they do take away some points because of the high upfront cost. In their words, Nest is “pretty, but it also costs a pretty penny”. It’s a streamlined and premium option for those looking for great home security who don’t mind spending a little extra cash.
As the above reviews suggest, most customers have complaints about Google Nest’s customer service representatives and general equipment malfunctions. Home security systems are only as good as the equipment that ostensibly guards your home against burglars and drives away would-be invaders. Equipment malfunctions make them totally useless, as there are many ways that potential burglars can determine that a home security system is a bust rather than an actual deterrent.
Furthermore, when customers complained to Nest in order to get their equipment replaced or repaired, many customer service representatives gave them a hard time or otherwise unhelpful. This resulted in many customers feeling like their contracts weren’t worth it and their money was wasted. As a result, it’s no surprise that some customers felt like pressing a claim against Google Nest.
Furthermore, rude customer service representatives are evidently becoming the norm across all smaller companies under the Google umbrella. It seems that Google, in growing to be ever larger every year, is taking on some of the negative characteristics of other big telecommunication or technology companies like Comcast. Time will tell whether the negative customer service representative trend continues or if they can right the ship.
Previously, judges ruled against a class-action lawsuit against Google Nest for false advertising regarding one of their thermostat units. The class-action lawsuit almost made it to court but was rejected on grounds of the evidence not meeting certain requirements for inaccuracy regarding the product.
This being said, Google and other smart home companies have already been the focus of several attempted class-action lawsuits. Google and companies like them routinely remove functionality from consumer devices after they have been purchased. While no class-action lawsuit has currently made it to court, many are gathering signatures and are petitioning courts for class-action status against the Google parent corporation.
