We’ve put together some of the most common internet connection issues that people experience, and we’ve given you our best solutions below for troubleshooting your slow internet. Take the time to go through each process and see if you can get your internet speed back up to standards. If not, we have a solution for that too!

Here are our top suggestions for troubleshooting slow internet:

  • Cable Connection – Many cable connections are disturbed by a faulty or damaged cord. If it’s just a small fracture, you might not even notice it other than your slow internet. But, chances are you wouldn’t think to check your cable wiring unless you visibly saw the issue. Keep in mind that as technology evolves, your cable wire needs to be up to standards as well. If it’s old, replace it with a newer version.
  • Network Configuration –  Many internet providers, including HughesNet, will want to troubleshoot your network configuration settings. They do this to see if any of your devices or computers are the leading cause of your network issue’s problems. When trying to establish the reason for your slow internet download speed, you’ll want to check your network configuration.
  • Data Limits – Did you know that many plans come with data limits? Yep, and after you’ve reached your monthly data limit, your internet speed could be drastically reduced. You’ll need to check your plan with HughesNet to see if you have a data limit and if that is why your internet is slow. Keep in mind that multiple devices streaming and downloading can quickly max out your data in a short period of time.
  • Speed Test – Knowing your connection speeds will help you rule out any other issues that your internet might be suffering from. You can easily run a speed test for free to see what your download and uploads Mbps is. We’ll talk more about this in a few and give you the best resources to use for performing a free speed test.
  • Faulty Equipment – When’s the last time you paid any attention to your router or modem? When nothing is wrong, most people don’t ever think about their equipment. However, over time your router and or modem will lose their luster and become old and outdated. This is the perfect time to invest in upgrading your equipment. You might be surprised at just how fast your internet actually is when using newer devices.
  • Check Your Bandwidth – People often underestimate how much bandwidth they need to effectively avoid internet lagging. If your household has a ton of devices using your internet connection, you might want to find out if you have enough bandwidth to support all that usage.

Test Your Internet Speed

Before you pick up the phone to call HughesNet’s customer service, you should consider running a speed test to see if your connection speeds are the issue. We suggest using Google’s free speed test; it’s easy to use and is considered to be a reliable source. Just type ‘Speed Test’ into your search bar, and you’ll immediately see the option to run it.

If you prefer using a different site to perform your free speed test, here are few others we can recommend using:

Compare Your Speed with Your HughesNet Contract

HughesNet is not considered to be one of the fastest internet providers out there when it comes to download and upload speeds, so you’ll want to make sure you’re getting the maximum Mbps that your plan allows.

You can find the details of your internet speed capacity by verifying it on your monthly invoice from HughesNet. If you can’t find it there, go online to their website and check the info for the plan you selected.

Keep in mind that HughesNet plans typically come with download speeds up to 25 Mbps and its upload speeds come in at around 3 Mbps.
