Having issues with Verizon Fios? You may have legal options.
Verizon Fios is the Internet service provider arm of the broader Verizon telecommunications company. They offer a plethora of Internet packages and other services, so let’s break down exactly what they can provide you. We’ll also take a look at what their current customers think of their operation to determine whether they’re a good choice for most.
Verizon Fios is an Internet and TV service provided by the Verizon telecommunications parent company. Featuring connections made with fiber-optic cables, Verizon Fios ostensibly provides users with lightning-fast download times and upload speeds, along with top-tier customer service.
Verizon Fios provides Internet access at three speeds and associated pricing points. The first of these, “Internet 200/200”, is the basic plan for $39.99 per month and provides download speeds up to 200 MB per second. The next is “Internet 400/400”, and can be purchased for $59.99 per month with an associated 400 MB per second download speed.
Finally, “Fios Gigabit Connection” costs $79.95 per month and can provide download speeds up to about 940 MB per second or almost 1 GB per second. Note that these speeds rely on ideal connections, so the actual upload or download speeds can vary. All in all, however, these associated Internet plans and download speeds are pretty competitive in the modern market and can be purchased for reasonable asking prices overall. Furthermore, the FCC reports that Verizon Fios has higher than average actual Internet speeds, so there isn’t any advertising trickery going on.
The Better Business Bureau, which collects reviews and ratings from customers for accredited companies, has Verizon Fios ranked at 1.2 out of 5 stars. This indicates general customer dissatisfaction rather than overall satisfaction with the telecommunication service, billing, scheduling, and more.
However, we can also take a look at consumeraffairs.com, which provides another collection of valuable consumer rating insight. They collect user reviews from real customers of Verizon Fios’ Internet plans. They give the service 3 out of 5 stars based on 1100 ratings over the last year. This indicates a much more reasonable amount of satisfaction and general contentment from those who’ve used Verizon Fios most recently.
Let’s take a look at an expert review, though. Reviews.org, which is a site that publishes reviews only by those who actually use a service or have some experience, gives Verizon Fios 4 out of 5 stars in total. In the review, they praise the Internet service provider’s fast and symmetrical speed options, generally reliable service, elimination of annual contracts, and more. But they also take away a few points for limited availability based on geographic location.
Generally speaking, Verizon Fios customers have a number of complaints relating to their customer service representatives or to various problems with how bills are paid. For instance, some customers complained that they aren’t able to pay their bills online, despite it being a relatively staple feature for ISPs these days.
Other customers encountered various extra charges for the restoration of digital phone lines, even though Internet plans were the only things they had signed up for. In other words, it looked to these customers as though Verizon Fios was trying to charge them for things they weren’t actually using.
Furthermore, other customer complaints (along with more issues with general customer service) talk about how Verizon Fios will sometimes turn off the Internet for various plans or, perhaps, implement artificial data caps to slow downloads to a crawl. Still more customers seem to have a variety of complaints dealing with technical issues; one customer in particular found that they weren’t able to sign on to their Verizon Fios account for over three days, and any access they were able to get with the Internet was excruciatingly slow.
All in all, Verizon Fios evidently has several problems according to its most vocal customers. As with many large companies, a plethora of these are explicitly because of bad customer service.
In 2017, Verizon Fios faced a lawsuit filed by Pennsylvania customers, who claimed that the company violated state consumer protection laws by using confusing messaging regarding its boxes. Ultimately, this lawsuit demonstrates poor company practices in an attempt to wrestle more money from the pockets of its consumers.
It seems that, like many major companies, Verizon Fios occasionally pushes its customers to far, who may need legal assistance to pursue resolution.
