How to File a Complaint Against ADT

Learn your options for getting your voice heard and make ADT pay

Fighting large corporations like ADT over a breach of contract can be very frustrating. Whether ADT has overcharged you for their services, misled you, or their service simply wasn’t what they promised, you deserve compensation. However, ADT makes it clear in their service contract that customers cannot file class action lawsuits.

So what are the different ways you can file a complaint against ADT?

Learn about the Ways to File a Claim against ADT

File a Claim against ADT in Small Claims Court

What is it? A claim against ADT in small claims court is one legal option, and sometimes the only one you have. Why? Because the fine print in your user agreement or service contract with ADT likely says you’re not allowed to join or start a class action lawsuit.

When to try it: If you have a lot of time on your hands and want to file in a public setting, then this is a good tool. But it takes months and lots of trips to the court house.

What you need to do: Follow the steps laid out here in FairShake’s Guide to Sue ADT in Small Claims Court.

What to expect: If you follow all the steps precisely and your claim is strong, you might qualify for compensation from ADT. There are aware limits though, usually of $10,000.

File a Claim against ADT with your Credit Card Provider

What is it? Any time you pay for a service like ADT with a credit card or debit card, or even directly through your bank account, there are rules that ADT has to follow. These rules are set up by the bank or credit card company you use. If ADT violates those rules then you can turn to your bank or credit card company and follow a procedure that allows you to dispute certain types of charges.

When to try it: If your claim against ADT has to do with a one time charge that was made using your bank account, debit card, or a credit card, then this might be a good way to get a resolution, especially if ADT customer service isn’t helpful. You will likely have to substantiate the issue with documentation.

What you need to do: Most banks and credit card companies allow customers to complete the charge back process online. This means you can log into your account and dispute the charge.

What to expect: The bank or credit card company will likely remove the charge or reimburse you for it temporarily while they review the situation. They might ask for more documentation from you and then reach out to ADT on your behalf before they make a final decision.

File a Better Business Bureau Complaint against ADT

What is it? The Better Business Bureau and all local chapters serve as private organizations that collect and publish complaints against companies including ADT. They get funding from affiliate fees and give businesses a chance to respond to the complaints customers lodge.

When to try it: When ADT’s BBB page shows that it is actively responding to claims. You can always publish a complaint at any time, regardless of ADT’s activity level and this will at least give a public face to your issue.

What you need to do: Go to ADT’s BBB profile and follow the instructions for submitting a complaint.

What to expect: This depends on whether ADT monitors and responds to their complaints. If they do, they might give you a response, or the BBB might give you a response. It is entirely up to ADT to decide whether they respond or not, and whether they give compensation.

File a Complaint Against ADT through Binding Arbitration

What is it? Remember the mention earlier regarding the small print of your ADT contract? You cannot join or start a class action lawsuit. However, you can file a claim against ADT that involves the arbitration. This is a process that costs ADT money too, so chances are they will try to settle early in the process rather than pursue full arbitration.

When to try it: Any action where you believe ADT misled you, violated their agreement with you, or violated the law can be pursued through binding arbitration. Typically claims involve not just commenting on the issue, but a request for how ADT can fix the issue. This usually involves financial compensation for the problem.
